What is a Link Balancer?
A Link Balancer is a network-based appliance designed to proactively manage bandwidth and multiple ISP or private links. Link balancers are also know as Multi-Homing Devices.

Link Balancers will perform the following functions:

Link failover: should an ISP link not be available one or more links will handle the traffic until the troubled link returns to normal.

Outbound traffic balancing: the link balancer will be able to distribute traffic leaving the organization across available links based on organizational preferences

Inbound traffic balancing: through DNS (Domain Name Service) interception, a link balancer will be able to distribute incoming traffic across all selected links. Common examples include roaming VPN clients, webmail access, transactional applications and email retrieval by remote users.

Session persistence management: with certain types of traffic, sessions such as SIP (VoIP), HTTPS (secure web site access) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) cannot be balanced.

Tips for Better Bandwidth

Require Authentication. Properties with open access often experience neighboring users consuming their bandwidth. Requiring a username and password, access code, or PMS authentication will cut down the amount of users stealing bandwidth from your guests.
Network Redundancy. This idea is growing in popularity as technology improves and costs come down. A network running on a single circuit it at the mercy of that provider. When an outage occurs, your site is down until the issue is resolved. With link load balancers, multiple circuits can be utilized at once. If there is an outage on one circuit, your users won't be affected. The key is having circuits with different providers.
Updated Infrastructure. It is imperative to have a gateway that can handle the proper amount of usage for your property. Other key pieces to consider are switches and access points. Make the move to dual band 802.11n access points for higher throughput, improved reliability, and increased range. If you go with 802.11n access points you should also install gigabit switches.
Bandwidth Rate Limiting. Put a bandwidth cap on all users. Limiting the amount of bandwidth for a single user will prevent one guest from consuming all of the bandwidth.
Bandwidth Up-Sell. Offer a free plan for users which provides them basic bandwidth, an example would be 512K down and 256K up. Also provide users to purchase bandwidth upgrades to allow access to double and triple their bandwidth. Your site must have network redundancy and enough available bandwidth to make this work.
Load Balancing. Provide an appliance at the front of the network that actively manages traffic to keep usage balanced over multiple circuits. Be sure the product offers active link load balancing. Be careful when selecting a link load balancer, as some products only allow a secondary circuit to be utilized when the primary circuit fails. If you are paying for multiple circuits, be sure you have the capability of using each of them to the highest extent.
Bring the Home Experience to your site. Data obtained between 7/10/11-8/8/11 from netindex.com, states the average download speed in the United States is 11.35Mbps. Being able to offer that bandwidth to each user would be expensive, but far too many hotels have a single T1 (1.5Mbps) to share between all of their guests. While T1 circuits are very reliable they just don't offer enough bandwidth for the price. In most locations you can get a 20+ Mbps cable and a 10+ Mbps DSL circuit for less than half the price of a 1.5Mbps T1. Other solid alternatives to a T1 include Fiber and Metro Ethernet. If you need a T1 for your phone system needs, get a dynamic voice and data T1. This will give you your voice channels when they are needed and more bandwidth when they are not. Combining this with a link load balancer and cable circuit and you have just given yourself much more bandwidth, decreased your monthly bills, provided redundancy and INCREASED YOUR GUEST SCORES!!

IP3 Gateway Security Certificate Expired, Result Alarms Guests

On March 7, 2011 the SSL security certificate for IP3 Networks expired. When a user tries to access the internet on an IP3 gateway, via wired or wireless, a warning will be displayed. These warnings cause users to fear logging onto the internet resulting in increased help desk calls and lower internet scores. Here are some examples of SSL certificate warnings.

The SSL certificate has expired due to IP3 Networks going out of business. The specific design of the IP3 software does not allow this certificate to be replaced. Please be aware that any vendor offering to circumvent the security certificate by altering the IP3 software could pose legal risk to your property.

Hospitality Lawful Intercept - ANTlabs InnGate 3

Lawful Interception

Faced with heightened use of the internet in organized crimes such as data theft, pedophilia and in particular terrorism, governments around the world have introduced “Lawful Intercept” directives which require providers of Internet services to keep records of all the communications that take place over their Internet service and attempt to identify and record the user. The required information must be collected, stored for a specified period of time and made available to authorities at any time.

What this means is that as a hospitality service provider providing Internet access for your guests, you need to be responsible for knowing who accesses the internet or emails via your server and requires you to store information on user IDs, IP addresses and the date and time of communication.

InnGate 3 Supports Lawful Intercept InnGate 3 supports lawful intercept out-of-the-box by providing a Syslog readable trace of information such as:

1) Source IP address – This is the IP address of the user. We store both the internal and external addresses.

2) Destination IP address – This is the IP address of the site that the user is connecting to.

3) Connection type – This shows whether it is a HTTP connection or TCP/UDP connection.

4) Connection time – This is the time at which the connection is made.

5) MAC address – The MAC address of the user’s device.

6) User ID – Depending on the authentication type, this can be the Radius User ID, the PMS room number or credit card transaction ID.

With such detailed information, lawful intercept requirements are met, allowing authorities to identify the user if the need arises.

Hotel Sales Staff to work from Anywhere.

In today‘s work atmosphere, every communication problem has a solution. At an upscale hotel in Missouri, the communication issue included needing more admin room and they just didn’t have any of the much needed space to accommodate their sales staff. The owner of this hotel had other buildings that he owned near the hotel, but didn’t know how to accomplish this without affecting the efficiency of the sales staff. The owner knew they could depend on MTS to help solve their problem. As our team investigated the situation, we found there wasn’t any cabling run between the hotel and the owners other buildings, and it just wasn’t cost efficient to do so. Instead of running expensive cable, MTS installed a teleworker server at one of the additional buildings which allowed remote employees to have full functionality, just as they would if they were sitting in the office at the main hotel, without the expense of the cable. This historical hotel will have the latest Mitel SX-200 ICP MX Controller. The development group decided MTS was a natural choice for this project due to the success of their previous Hotel Indigo. Upscale Boutique Hotel Goes All IP

MTS, a Mitel Hospitality Specialist partner signed a new boutique hotel near Kansas City. This hotel will have a fully converged voice and data network with IP guestroom telephones.

This new hotel will open with a Mitel 3300 MXe PBX, Mitel 5500 IP console with their option for a 5340 console when available, 5340, 5324, & 5312 phones for administrative staff. The Mitel 3300 embedded voicemail will provide their voice messaging needs. Their calls will be posted to the property management system via a Metropolis Call Accounting System. Two voice PRI’s from AT&T will provide the dial tone to the property. They will also have condos which will be setup via a separate billing table for long term residents.

Telematrix 3302IP-MWD5 telephones will go in every room along with 3300TRM IP phones for common areas. This hotel will serve as the central answer point for two hotels all managed through a Mitel 6100 contact center management software (prairieFyre) for inbound calls and reservations.
